Starting to Lift and Learning to Balance

Over the past couple of years, it’s happened occasionally. I’ll be minding my own business working out on the weight floor, and a girl I’ve never seen before walks up and asks me to show her what I’m doing. It surprised me at first, but I was happy to help. Each time I was able to show another girl around, it was the highlight of my day.

I remember, and still occasionally deal with, the intimidation factor of first entering the weight area of the gym. It certainly helped me when I was first starting to feel my way around, to learn to speak to others in the gym, ask advice, etc. One thing I learned was that those other girls who looked so comfortable and confident had started somewhere too.

Those experiences made me want to start a blog, talking about the feelings, joys, and difficulties that particularly females, but any new gymgoer, might experience. Among these are the many misconceptions about the effects of weight-lifting on the female body. The beauty of it is that you can choose to build according to your goals. Once I got started, it helped me in other aspects of my life too. The knowledge of how to shape my own body improved my overall confidence as well as my personal body image.

Five years later, it is still the favorite activity of my day. It is an integrated part of an overall healthy lifestyle that I would love to share, including: eating good food, working out around a busy schedule, and working towards your goals. These are all challenges that, from what I’ve gathered, most females in particular have encountered when “getting into fitness.” I would like to share my passion for weight-lifting, but also talk about some of the struggles that have come and gone with it. Maybe it will help another girl out, when she’s thinking of taking that step toward the iron bar.
